Welcome to this week’s e-news.

Last Friday afternoon Leanne attended the monthly networking First Friday Club with our event partners Watson Burton at TigerTiger which was kindly sponsored by Balfour Beatty. Over 80 built environment professionals attended the event with a good mix of consultants, clients, architects and more. The next First Friday Club will be held at the new Crowne Plaza Hotel on December 4th and further details will be available very shortly on how to register.

This week Leanne and I have been in London for a few days, on Wednesday we attended our Constructing Excellence National conference at Lords Cricket Ground. The theme of the day was "Beyond the Built Environment" with speakers presenting on social values improving businesses, sharing data, how to attract the younger generation into the industry and the improvements of Crossrail. The conference was a great day and it was pleasing to see some of you from the North East there.

Today I am attending the National Association of Women in Construction National AGM and Conference at the offices of Trowers & Hamlin LLP in London. The speakers will be discussing encouraging women into the industry, their journeys and updates on the regional NAWIC centres. I will look forward to seeing those from the North East there too.

Next week we have one event taking place which is the RIBA Plan of Work and 8 reasons why it makes good business sense delivered by Tim Bailey from xsite Architecture and being held at Ward Hadaway’s office. Tim will discuss why the plan of work is good for your business, how it can help and also speak about his recent book. If you haven’t yet registered please see below for details on the event.

We are delighted to announce for a sixth year running Corepeople Recruitment are headline sponsors for the Constructing Excellence in the North East Awards and would like to thank them for their exceptional support again this year. We also have Esh Construction, APS, DAC Beachcroft,  Northumbrian Water Group and Vinci Construction for their continued support too. If you are interested in entering the Awards, we are holding a Launch event on December 1st and details are below on how to register.

Best Wishes

18/11/2015 - 8 Reasons why the RIBA Plan of Work makes Business Sense

Date: 18th November 2015
Time: 8.30am – 10.00am
Venue: Offices of Ward Hadaway, Sandgate House, Quayside, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 3DX

Tim Bailey is founder of xsite architecture and the author of the recently published Design: A Practical Guide to RIBA Plan of Work 2013 Stages 2 and 3. A guide that explains the importance of the Concept Design and Developed Design, how to achieve a balance of creativity and method and how it should interact with the briefing and construction phases.

While there seemed some hesitation in parts of the industry to adopt the new RIBA Plan of Work (PoW) when it was introduced in 2013, it is clear now that it has become the ‘new norm’ for referencing work stages across the industry. This is testament to the enduring power of a simple and clear framework for the processes that we all recognise every project has to go through to be successfully completed. The real beauty of the 2013 version is its ability to capture the flexibility required to match current procurement trends. And its secret weapon is its usefulness as a way for design teams and contractors to connect their design management skills to their business needs.

** During the morning you will be able to see the programme in full swing!**

Our next course is in November, it is focussed around the North Tyne area.

The programme consists of:

Week 1 - with the military, developing communication, teamwork, problem solving skills in an environment that promotes respect, reliability and integrity…and more.

Weeks 2-3 – with a local training provider, developing an understanding of H&S, completing CSCS (if appropriate for work placement) and SFEDI course, including updating CV writing skills etc

Weeks 4-6 – with a local employer

Employers are not asked to guarantee employment, although there is an opportunity for them to ‘talent spot’. However, a requirement is to provide an interview for the individuals on work placement, helping them to identify where they are performing well and where there may be areas for improvement.

During week 1, there will be a visitors day where attendees can engage with the participants as they undertake their military training.

A range of techniques is discussed to care for the fabric of structures with sensitivity, imagination and minimum intervention.

This discussion will include details of our key areas of expertise, such as masonry, stone, timber and concrete repair. We will also look at case studies from some of Quadriga’s successful past and ongoing projects on historic buildings to show how we apply our methods in a practical way.
