Local Construction company supporting colleague to raise funds for Maggies Cancer Care

Chris Ellis an Estimator for local construction company Rainton Construction has teamed up with Pioneer Beards to help raise awareness and funds for Maggies Cancer Care Centre in Newcastle.

The challenge he has set himself is to grow a yeard (a yeard, also known as a year long beard). He took his last shave on December 31st and will not shave until 1st January 2017!

Chris himself knows the suffering relating to cancer as he battled with Bowel and Liver cancer aged only 23. This year marks a huge milestone for Chris as he will be 10 years all clear.

Chris's close friend was diagnosed with Breast cancer in 2010 whilst in her early thirties. It hit her hard! Harder than most people thought it would. 6 months ago she was diagnosed with a reoccurrence of the disease in her bones. Maggies Care Centre in Newcastle has been instrumental in aiding her through this recent battle and has been as important as any medicinal treatment on offer.

Chris had never personally heard of Maggies, but after seeing the difference it is making inspired him to do this challenge.  Pioneer Beards will be doing various publicity events over the next 12 months to help raise awareness including updating their twitter @pioneerbeards and facebook accounts every Friday with a photo update of Chris’ progress. They are also providing him with beard products to aid the transition into beardness.

Chris will be updating his twitter so please follow for weekly updates @chrell83. For further information on Pioneer Beards, please visit www.pioneerbeards.co.uk.

To donate to Chris’s challenge, please go to https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/pioneerbeardschallenge – any donations welcome and would be greatly appreciated!

Finally we will present examples of good practice surface water flood management, specifically in relation to SuDS and an award-winning site at Lamb Drove (Cambridgeshire) which has been the focus for many case studies.  We will draw on recent post-construction monitoring on the benefits of sustainable drainage at the site.

Constructing Excellence in the North East Club in conjunction with ORCA are delighted to bring you this morning briefing on the future of light gauge steel works.

Whilst light gauge steel is a well-tried and tested product, ORCA’s approach to its use is radically different and better, bringing together a number of factors:

• Design-led systems to maximise efficiencies in manufacture and assembly, and “designing out” problems before they arise.

• Full integration of manufacturing software with Revit, Autodesk and BIM modelling, with automated data transfer.

• Careful engineering of components and processes to reduce material content and waste.

• Simplified and smaller fabrication units generating lower fixed costs in factory and plant; and allowing mobile manufacturing on site where appropriate, simplifying the supply chain and offering just-in-time logistics.

As a result of the above factors, it can offer the advantages of:

• Accuracy – offering significant advantages in relation to airtightness and thus thermal performance.

• Speed of erection with in-house reception teams.

• Reduced requirements for plant and scaffolding during erection.

• Flexibility in both design and delivery – offering the advantages of Off Site Manufacture without the inflexibility and cost often associated with other systems.

• When using roof panel cassettes, usable loft space in houses.

• Stability – high levels of rigidity and no shrinkage.

• Reduced fire risk during construction.

• De-risking the construction process, particularly by removing bricklaying from the critical path.  The shell of a house can be weather tight and available for first fix trades within 2 to 3 days.  With dry rain-screen cladding, there is no need for any brickwork
