Smart Construction 2025 showcases AI-driven innovation in the North East

Smart Construction 2025 brought the North East construction industry together for a powerful showcase of innovation, sustainability and forward-thinking practice, highlighting the tools and approaches shaping the future of the built environment.

Organised by Constructing Excellence North East (CENE)’s Innovation Group, one of CENE’s four core theme groups, and delivered in collaboration with Newcastle and Northumbria Universities, the event took place at The Catalyst Building in Newcastle.

Supported by headline sponsor Northumbrian Water Group, category sponsors were Buston & Maughan Ltd and Johnson Carmichael. Food sponsors included JTC Furniture Group and Storm Tempest. The conference and exhibition attracted leaders, innovators and academics from across the sector.

The Innovation Group brings together representatives from organisations across the construction and built environment sectors to drive forward best practice, collaboration and adoption of new technologies. By sharing expertise and supporting pilot projects, the group helps the North East construction industry implement smarter, more efficient and sustainable ways of working.

Speakers explored the major trends driving change in construction. Digital transformation was a recurring theme, with AI, IoT and real-time analytics now central to improving accuracy, streamlining decision-making and enhancing productivity. Sustainability remained firmly in focus, with delegates examining low-carbon materials, energy-efficient design and approaches supporting the industry’s transition toward net zero. Modular and prefabricated construction also featured strongly, reflecting their growing role in reducing cost, time and waste across projects.

Delegates experienced a range of emerging technologies now being deployed on live schemes in the UK. BIM and Digital Twins demonstrated how enhanced collaboration and lifecycle management can transform project delivery. Robotics, drones and autonomous machinery showcased improvements in surveying and on-site efficiency.

AI and machine-learning applications highlighted opportunities for predictive maintenance, risk forecasting and smarter scheduling. Meanwhile, AR/VR platforms offered immersive design previews, interactive client engagement and innovative safety training solutions. Presentations from organisations including Northumbrian Water, Nottingham Trent University, AIM Housing, Amvic, Bellrock, Buildots, Seismic and ZTL (Applebridge), brought these technologies to life with real project examples.

A consistent message throughout the day was the importance of collaboration and interoperability. Speakers emphasised seamless data sharing, integrated workflows and the value of adopting tools that complement existing systems rather than replace them.

Delegates left with practical guidance to support smart construction adoption, including piloting innovations on individual projects before scaling, leveraging data throughout the project lifecycle and prioritising integration to ensure new tools enhance delivery. Sustainability and safety were highlighted as essential considerations, driven by evolving regulatory expectations and client demands.

Catriona Lingwood, chief executive of Constructing Excellence in the North East, said: “Smart Construction 2025 has once again shown the drive within our industry to embrace new ways of working. The knowledge shared and the technologies on display demonstrated the real, practical progress being made. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors, speakers and exhibitors for helping deliver another successful event.”

Andy Ray, chair of the Innovation Group, said: “Our sector is adapting to significant challenges, from new safety requirements to ambitious carbon reduction goals. Smart Construction 2025 highlighted the approaches helping us respond to those challenges while also inspiring future generations of construction professionals. It reinforces that our industry is innovative, collaborative and committed to continuous improvement.”
