Welcome to this week’s e-news.

This week has been particularly busy with meeting a number of the regions colleges and organisations to encourage them to enter the G4C Awards of which deadline day is tomorrow. We are looking forward to receiving your nominations and if you require any support please call Leanne or me as soon as possible to discuss. We would like to thank Atlas Cloud for their support and for sponsoring the Apprentice of the Year Award. We only have one more category to sponsor so if you feel you would like to show your support of our up and coming young people then please contact Leanne. Ticket sales for the G4C Awards are going really well and it will be great to see so many of you there. If you would like to purchase any tickets for the dinner which is taking place on Friday 1st April please see further details below.

Last Thursday evening I attended the G4C Social Media & Networking event held at Watson Burton, with great presentations and interactive sessions from Kathryn Dishman of KD Communications and Meryl Levington of Actif. We would like to thank Kathryn & Meryl for an excellent evening and Watson Burton for their wonderful hospitality. Following the event I attended the Willmott Dixon Burns Night at The Baltic which was as theatrical as ever and a good night was had by all. I would like to thank Nick Corrigan and all the Willmott Dixon team for a tremendous night.

This morning we held the Climate Change & Flood Risk Management event in association with Royal Haskoning and Northumbrian Water Group. I would like to thank Ross Whitelaw, Fola Ogunyoye of Royal Haskoning and Paul Davison of NWG for their informative presentations and to Bond Dickinson for hosting the event. If you were unable to attend and would like information on the presentations, please contact Leanne.

Next week we have two events taking place, on Wednesday morning we have the seminar ‘CDM Regulations: What Clients need to know’. James Ritchie will discuss how to select the right contractors and consultants and why it’s important, how much should a principal designer consult their clients and more. We do still have a few places remaining and details are below. Then on Friday afternoon is the first First Friday Club of 2016 and it is taking place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Details are below on how to register your place for this and other events.

Our next CENE Club event will take place on February 10th in association with ORCA-LGS and they will discuss the pros of using a light gauge steel technology as well as the results it will achieve on a project. The details are below and this event which is FREE to CENE Club members.

We are busy planning a conference for you all in May and would like to know what you would like to see on the agenda, key themes will include Construction 2025. We welcome your suggestions and look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

CIOB Student Challenge - Mentors Required

CIOB North East are looking for construction industry mentors to work with teams of BTEC Level 3 students on a day-long Student Challenge, taking place at Hartlepool College on Wednesday 24th February.

Teams of between 4-6 students from 4 different colleges will take part in the event, which sees participants work through a challenge which is provided to them upon arrival in the morning and eventually pitch their findings to a panel of judges in the afternoon. Students are typically provided with site plans and information based upon a live regional project, and have access to expert speakers who can assist them with their ideas throughout the day.

The role of a mentor is to guide, motivate, encourage and assist the students with preparing their response to the brief, not to provide all the answers but to give them a gentle nudge in the right direction. The specific topic and questions are being kept under close wraps, as these will not be revealed to the students until the morning of the event.

For further information or to express an interest in assisting, please contact Nikki Silcock, CIOB North East Branch Manager, on 07717 367431.

10/02/2016 - The Future in Light Gauge Steel

Time: 8.30am – 10.00am
Venue: Offices of Ward Hadaway LLP, Newcastle upon Tyne
Cost: FREE to CENE Club Members, £35+VAT Non Members (Cancellation policy is within 48 hours notice)

Constructing Excellence in the North East Club in conjunction with ORCA are delighted to bring you this morning briefing on the future of light gauge steel works.

Whilst light gauge steel is a well-tried and tested product, ORCA’s approach to its use is radically different and better, bringing together a number of factors:

• Design-led systems to maximise efficiencies in manufacture and assembly, and “designing out” problems before they arise.

• Full integration of manufacturing software with Revit, Autodesk and BIM modelling, with automated data transfer.

• Careful engineering of components and processes to reduce material content and waste.

• Simplified and smaller fabrication units generating lower fixed costs in factory and plant; and allowing mobile manufacturing on site where appropriate, simplifying the supply chain and offering just-in-time logistics.

As a result of the above factors, it can offer the advantages of:

• Accuracy – offering significant advantages in relation to airtightness and thus thermal performance.

• Speed of erection with in-house reception teams.

• Reduced requirements for plant and scaffolding during erection.

• Flexibility in both design and delivery – offering the advantages of Off Site Manufacture without the inflexibility and cost often associated with other systems.

• When using roof panel cassettes, usable loft space in houses.

• Stability – high levels of rigidity and no shrinkage.

• Reduced fire risk during construction.

• De-risking the construction process, particularly by removing bricklaying from the critical path.  The shell of a house can be weather tight and available for first fix trades within 2 to 3 days.  With dry rain-screen cladding, there is no need for any brickwork

• which court to use;

• commencing and serving the claim, including what goes into the various pleadings;
